Fancy cakes on bargain plates

Karen, of the truly beautiful Lavender and Lovage blog, posted a wonderful feature on her mum’s fancy cakes the other day.

It inspired me to make my own fancy cakes today:

I was particularly keen to try out my new china. I got 3 more miraculous teacup-and-saucer-joined-onto-a-plate combos (I’ve decided to call them ‘cuplates’ from now on, until I find out their proper name, if they have one) in a charity shop yesterday morning, and then I found the beautiful oval roses plate in an antique shop in Abernethy in the afternoon. The pretty plate was on sale for £4 and when I asked the lady if she’d do it for £3 and she said ‘yes’ with no hesitation, I was chuffed to bits.

I decorated some of the small cakes with tiny jelly babies, including one martian:

A nice cup of tea and a small fancy cake on one of my new cuplates:

  1. umm.. i’m salivating!

  2. All of it looks beautiful! I hope your wrist is healing.

  3. I have never seen such beautiful decorating! From above, the desserts look like they’ve been colored with water color paints! Brilliant! I hope you don’t mind if I try something like that some day with my sprinkle collection. :) I’ll post a photo on my blog and credit you. :)

    • Thank you very much but I don’t deserve the credit at all, what I did was all down to Karen at Lavender and Lovage. Did you look at her blog? Her mum’s cakes are amazing! I look forward to seeing yours when you do them.

      • Well then, I shall credit you AND Karen and then my readers will see my cakes and yours and Karen’s and the inspiration will continue growing outward, truly like a splendid kaleidoscope design growing bigger. =)

  4. Looks lovely!

  5. Wow, those are fancy and those are some pretty impressive cake decorating skills. I love the idea of the saucer plate thingys – less washing up for a start!

    • Thank you Cat! You can get so many nice things to stick on top of cakes now and all you need to do is lob them on, very easy. I agree about the plates, a big thumbs up for that.

  6. How wonderful! My mum will be so pleased that her Fancies inspired you to make some wee cakes yourself! Thanks SO much for the link back to my post and for your wonderful comments too……again, you TEASE me with those cuplates, I LOVE them, they are so quirky and yet pretty at the same time. I LOVE your decorations on your fancy cakes too…..they are so beautifully edible! And, as a fellow china collector, you have some LOVELY pieces, I think I may have china envy coming on! I hope your wrists are getting better…..better leave you now so you can take tea!

    • Thank you very much Karen, I’m so grateful to you and your mum for that amazing post. Your blog is an inspiration to me and to many others, I’m sure. It’s really strange about these cuplates. When my mum bought me that first one she said she used to have several of them and they were fairly common about 30 or 40 years ago, but I had never seen them before. Then I got that one she bought me and saw 3 more only days later, it was bizarre. I hope you stumble across some the way I did. I love raking through china in second-hand shops, you can get some real bargains.

  7. You’ve got me thinking what their name is now! Those teacup side plate things were really popular a good couple of years ago. Name aside, they look lovely.

    • Ah, so you know about them too? My mum also says they were pretty common a while back, but they’re completely new to me. I think they must just have gone out of fashion, but I wouldn’t be at all surprised if they had a revival, I think they’re great. If you remember the name I’d love to know.

  8. Gorgeous! I love the riot of flowers and soft colors. Delectable! I’ll be “pinning” for sure!

  9. So charming! Would be perfect for a little girls’ tea party.

  10. I did some web searching, and I think they may be called tea and toast sets.

  12. Hi, I wanted to let you know that I nominated you for the KREATIV BLOGGER AWARD! :)

  13. That roses plate is so beautiful! Now I have cake AND plate envy… I hope your wrist is much better now.

    • Thank you Christine, I’m really pleased with that plate. I hope the wrists are on the mend, but I have to be patient (not easy for me!).

  14. Hope you are better!

  15. I love the three pound plate. A beautiful collection of flowers.

  16. Looks like an entire tea party on a plate. Delightful!

  17. Seems so yummyyyy. I have to try these!!!

  18. Yum! They look so very tasty, and pretty. I also wish for a cuplate, they are beautiful and I have never seen them before!

    • Thank you! If I get any more information about cuplates I’ll certainly be passing it on. Marian from almostnothingbutmusic reckons they’re called Tea and Toast sets, which is rather lovely.

  19. Beautiful photos, and the cakes look gorgeous! We don’t eat many cakes but since following your blog I have been inspired to make scones, a ginger traybake and (most recently) a carrot cake. Oh dear! And I just love the china – well done for finding it.

  20. Naomi

What beautiful cakes and they look especially lovely on the roses plate.

  21. I really want cake now – I’m jealous :)

  22. the cakes match the plates so well! and i love both! the decorations remind me of another brilliant place to visit, not quite a tea shop but a great place to get a coffee and the most amazingly decorated ice cream called Aunty Betty’s in Stonehaven, aberdeenshire.

    • Thank you, it’s a nice lot of pink isn’t it? The place you describe rings a bell, I wonder if it’s the same place I remember. Thanks for the tip though, I’ll add it to my list!
